You've done it again, raising enough money to pay the annual servicing costs for 9 medical aid motorcycles in Nepal!
The Gurkhas are possibly the finest, certainly bravest, of British army regiments and we've been fortunate enough to have them run our security at Overland Events for the past few years. It made sense therefore that we should make The Gurkha Welfare Trust our charity of choice at The Winter Warmer.
The Gurkha Welfare Trust provides financial, medical and development aid to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities in Nepal, and much of that 'hands on' work, especially medical, is provided through the use of motorcycles. It's those bikes that you are helping to keep safely on the road.
Eleanor from the Trust has written to say:
"I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with the Winter Warmer Overland Event for your incredibly generous donations of £675 from the event itself, along with a further £122 raised at the meeting.
"We are so grateful to the biking community for coming together in support of The Gurkha Welfare Trust. We know how important the sense of community is within the biking world, and it means a great deal to us to have that support behind our work.
"Your combined donation of £797 will make a real difference. To put that into context, £675 alone is equivalent to the annual servicing costs for nine motorbikes, which our mobile health practitioners rely upon to reach some of the most vulnerable Gurkha pensioners and widows living in remote villages that cannot be accessed by 4x4 vehicles."
Dr Anil Maharjan (pictured below) is one of the Trust health workers who visits Gurkha veterans and widows at their homes in rural parts of Nepal to deliver medicine, check their health and refer them to local hospitals if they need further treatment. His work is only possible because of the bike that Overland supporters is helping to keep on the road.
So thanks again everyone for helping us continue to support causes that are important us, and for ensuring that in some small way we can all continue to support communities around this wonderful world.
